Did The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild really deserve to win the Game Of The Year award?

A lot of people would argue yes, yes it did, and there is certainly merit to that argument. Breath of the Wild is one of the most beautiful, expansive adventures to come out of Nintendo in the past ten years and it certainly deserves every bit of praise that it gets.

However, that doesn't mean that it's the best Nintendo game of the year. That award should rightfully go to Super Mario Odyssey, the latest adventure for the mustachioed plumber. This is the game that Mario fans have been clamouring for ever since Super Mario 64. It truly feels like a return to form for Mario, despite him never actually losing his lustre.

Besides being a fantastic game in its own right, there are some aspects of Super Mario Odyssey that are just outright better than Breath of the Wild. Although both are absolutely fantastic, Super Mario Odyssey just captured (no pun intended) me more. Here are the ten ways Super Mario Odyssey beats Breath of the Wild.

10. Variety

The variety of the gameplay in Super Mario Odyssey is certainly one of it's most defining features, and it's easy to say that you're never really doing the same thing at any point in your adventure.

From taking the role of a massive piece of meat, to jumping around in zero gravity, Super Mario Odyssey never has a dull moment. It seems like one of the primary missions of the game's developers was to be constantly surprising you with new things to do.

This level of variety can be seen in every aspect of the game. From the music, to the worlds you visit, Super Mario Odyssey is extremely varied. That's not always something you can say for the rest of the series.

Breath of the Wild does struggle somewhat in this regard. Combat and exploration are such huge aspects of the game but they don't really advance all that much and mostly follow the same pattern. Variety isn't Breath of the Wild's strongest point.
