Until 2K get their finger out and actually make it happen, older gamers will be found mumbling Teddy Long impressions to themselves and bemoaning the lack of a GM Mode in today's series. That feature, long lost to the days of SmackDown vs. Raw, was brilliant.

Good news: steps are being taken back towards it.

No, WWE 2K19 doesn't star a fully-realised authority figure sim like a decade or so ago, but the Universe Mode finally has some freedom of choice that was lacking before. That's been a major problem with Universe. Over the past few years, an uninviting slog that promises so much yet delivers so little has greeted players.

2K have paid attention to fan gripes to come up with a Universe that, whilst still restrictive in certain ways, has a lot more customisation and chances to play pro wrestling God than ever before. Anyone who has dismissed the mode after a few hours of setting up will be pleased by these changes in 2K19, because they should make Universe more accessible to those who don't want to play every match but still want complete control.

So, GM Mode for 2K20, lads? Lads...?
