10 Big Money Premier League Signings That Were A Total Waste
There are times in football when you simply have to scratch your head in amazement.
Money circulates around the Premier League in such vast amounts these days that barely an eyelid is batted when a signing doesn't work out.
Countless times we see millions of pounds spent on players most of us have never heard of, while a recent trend has seen young English talent exchange hands for astronomical sums.
Harry Maguire has just this week completed a move to Manchester United for in excess of £80m, while transfer deadline day promises to see even more cash exchange hands.
Premier League clubs do get it right at times, and big money signings like Rio Ferdinand, Luis Suarez and Sergio Aguero have paid off massively for their respective clubs.
It's not always plain sailing for some of the biggest names in English football though, and there's been more than a handful of occasions when chairmen and scouting teams must sit firmly with their tail between their legs.
For every Suarez, we see an Andriy Shevchenko, while for every Ferdinand we see a Winston Bogarde.
It's safe to say that the Premier League has seen it's fair share of money wasted over the years.
10. Lazar Markovic - Liverpool (£20 Million)
It would be fair to say Liverpool don't always have the best record when it comes to making big name signings, and the signing of Markovic is the icing on the cake.
Arriving at Anfield back in 2014 for a fee of over £20m, the Serbian winger never got going for the Reds, and proved to be a massive flop.
An international who was expected to be one of the creative forces in a new-look Liverpool team, Markovic struggled to cement a position in the starting XI.
Often looking short of fitness and struggling to adapt to the pace of the English game, it quickly became apparent things wouldn't work out for Markovic.
He stayed put for the full four years of his contract, but made only 32 Premier League appearances in between loan spells at the likes of Fenerbahce and Hull City.
Last seen at Fulham, Markovic has since been released by the Cottagers and remains without a club.
