One man came from the brink of death to save Newcastle United's season. Where would The Magpies be without Jonas Gutierrez? The Argentine was just about the only bright spark in one of the bleakest periods in the club's history as John Carver oversaw a torrid five months at St James' Park. Since making his comeback to the first team during the Manchester United Game on March 4, Jonas' performances have been nothing short of brave; almost mind boggling at times considering everything he has gone through over the last two years. Sunday's 2-0 win over a hapless West Ham side epitomised Jonas to a tee. He was the star man for Newcastle on the day and was the main reason The Geordies saw off the threat of Hull City in the Premier League relegation battle. The winger got an assist and the crowning goal to his name as well as putting in a battling display lined with unerring quality at times. The type of performance that has been missing from the hallowed turf at St James for so, so long. If a performance summed up what Newcastle fans want to see from one of their players then Jonas' was it. He was brilliant. There wasn't a throat without a huge lump in it when Newcastle's number 18 left the pitch on Sunday. He received one hell of an ovation and seemed to be waving goodbye to a crowd that took him to their collective hearts over the last seven years.
