Newcastle United will look to complete the signing of Ivan Toney from Northampton Town this week after the forward watched the Magpies lose1-0 to Borussia Mönchengladbach from the St James' Park stands. According to The Chronicle, Toney underwent a two-day trial at the club over the weekend as the Magpies ruled the roost over the striker before attempting to finalise any deal for his signature. The 19-year-old trained with the Magpies on Friday and Saturday as he looks to secure a £500,000 transfer to Tyneside, according to The Chronicle.
A player regularly watched by Newcastle€™s chief scout Graham Carr over the past 18 months, Toney is one of the most highly-rated talents in the Football League right now. Toney reportedly underwent a medical earlier this week and is likely to sign once his trial is over, as long as he impresses. The forward has featured only intermittently for Northampton during their pre-season campaign while speculation over his future continues. Town€™s manager Chris Wilder revealed earlier in the week that he left Ivan Toney out of his side€™s squad for the pre-season friendly with Brackley due to the speculation linking the forward with a move to Tyneside. Both the Magpies and Wolverhampton Wanderers have reportedly been chasing the 19-year-old - with the latter having all-but-agreed a deal for Toney last year, only for him to fail a medical - and Wilder claimed something could happen towards a potential move imminently. Wilder - speaking to the Northampton Chronicle after the 3-0 victory over Brackley, a game in which he left Toney completely out of the squad - said:
€œThere€™s been some interest from Championship and Premier League clubs and we took the decision not to involve Ivan (Toney). €œThat will progress in time and if it does, we€™ll deal with that. If it doesn€™t, he€™ll be back as our player. €œQuite a lot of things have to happen for a player to be transferred or move on and everybody has to sort their own part of the deal out. €œToday we took the decision not to involve Ivan and we€™ll see what happens over the next 24-48 hours. €œI can€™t speculate what€™s going to happen. We€™ll know more in the next 48 hours and I€™m sure we€™ll talk about it next week if anything has kicked on.€
Toney has made 53 appearances for the Cobblers since he made his debut at the age of 16 back in 2012 and he has netted 11 Football League goals. He was the youngest player ever to represent Northampton and, due to his age, he could have significant sell-on potential for the Magpies.
