Steve McClaren & Garry Monk Embroiled In War Of Words
The Swans manager wasn't happy with Newcastle on Saturday... The Magpies' boss responded
has accused Newcastle United's players of trying to kick winger Jefferson Montero off the pitch during The Swans 2-0 win over The Magpies on Saturday. Montero was outstanding on the day (despite what you are about to read) and caused United endless amounts of problems. The Ecuadorian has made a flying start to the season, and after demolishing Chelsea's Branislav Ivanovi last week, gave Newcastle's Daryl Janmaat the run around at the Liberty Stadium. So much so that the Dutchman was sent off after numerous fouls on his opponent. And Monk, who sees his side sitting pretty inside the top four after two games, criticised United's approach to the game. Speaking afterwards, he said: " I thought Jeff (Montero) was a little more quiet today but you could see their tactic was basically to try and kick him. However, all credit to the referee as he spotted that early and quite rightly, the player was sent off in the end. He (Montero) needs to be protected. Steve McClaren, during his post-match press conference was quick to defend his players, he said: I dont think we are capable of doing that and I dont think the game represents that now. Our team is a football team, were not kickers and so Id dispute that. I thought the second card was harsh as it was a long way from goal, Daryl (Janmaat) had made his presence known, which he needed to do, but it was a little tug. I thought the referee could have been lenient, I could complain but it would be a limp one from then on it is very difficult. It was a the smallest war of words with no obvious winner, but a disagreement nonetheless.
