Space, it's one of the final frontiers humanity has yet to truly embrace. Of course one of the greatest Sci-Fi TV shows that revealed to us what might lie beyond our small solar system is Star Trek.

Whether watching the original series or the more recent Discovery, there are several Star Trek series that explore strange new worlds and remind us how humanity has constantly been changing themselves to embrace a future where everyone and everything may live in peace.

But the iconic groups of main characters on their classic spaceships and space stations cannot go into the endless voids of space, and battle the endless armies of the Borg or discover a species still developing from their own Renaissance-era without some emotional backup.

Animals have been a part of Star Trek since the very beginning. While some of these furry companions are very familiar to us, there are several pets from across the quadrants of Star Trek's universe that are just the best. These are some of the best pets in Star Trek we wish we could take with us on our own adventures into that final frontier.

10. Targs

It turns out even in a race of people whose only goal in life is to crush every single one of their enemies under the mighty boot of the Klingon Empire, there is still some room for fuzzy companionship.

Admittedly the Klingon version of boars, called Targs is less of a "fuzzy companion" and more a hardened beast that has separate subspecies that look like either a boar or a dog.

The time we see one of the boar Targs is in an episode of The Next Generation, where the crew has flashbacks to their past lives before their adventures aboard the Enterprise. Lt. Worf has a flashback to one of his pet Targs on Qo'noS.

A Targ really is just a boar with spikes, meaning this pet won't be the best kind for cuddling with when sleeping in bed, but they seem adorable nonetheless. And really who wouldn't want a unique boar to walk around town with.
