Music has always been an integral part of Doctor Who. Not just in the show, but outside it, too. The BBC Radiophonic Workshop, for example, revolutionised television soundtracks - the famous theme music is now so iconic that it's been heard in every corner of the globe and the current composer, Murray Gold, plays Doctor Who music to packed out auditoriums.
