BoJack Horseman Season 4 Review: 5 Ups & 1 Down

Prepare for the darkest season yet.

BoJack Horseman is much more than an animated comedy series. The topics it deals with, like misery, depression and addiction, are dead serious, yet the show tackles them in a comedic way, which successfully strips them down to their essence. There are no easy answers or solutions, the characters are not sympathetic, and the writing is often incredibly absurd. However, when it comes to BoJack Horseman, everything clicks, which explains why it's one of the best shows airing right now.

This season the show takes an even sadder turn than during the previous one, which was already quite dark. Season 4 tackles even more serious topics, while still remaining as funny and intelligent as ever. What other show can joke about cultural icons (both highbrow and lowbrow), bad parenting, childhood fears or rabies, yet not miss a single beat?

There is one notable change to the successful formula which must be stressed. BoJack is no longer the central character of the show. For example, his mother gets her own episode, and so does Princess Carolyn. There's more Mr. Peanutbutter, Diane and Todd as well. The best thing about the change is that it makes the show more layered, allowing it to sustain its ridiculously high entertainment value, albeit with one overarching issue.
