BoJack Horseman Season 4 Review: 5 Ups & 1 Down
Ups...
5. A Valid Commentary On Present Day Politics
Mr. Peanutbutter doesn't want to be a politician, yet he considers it his duty to run for the seat simply because people like him. This season shows that in politics likeability is more important than actual policy. He clearly has no idea how to run the state, nor how elections work, but he knows how to seduce the crowd, using the IT-factor that got him an acting job despite having no prior experience. He has no experience in politics, which according to him makes him perfect for the position as well.
The absurdity of today's politics is best presented in the first episode, as Mr. Peanutbutter states that instead of a regular election, himself and his opponent should participate in a skiing competition to determine the winner. The idea itself should be mocked by the more serious press, however the fact that the present governor doesn't want to participate in the competition is more interesting from a media perspective than his program of state improvement. This mocks how only potentially popular, catchy topics are considered worthy of coverage, while the more serious issues are barely worth mentioning.
