Community: Every Main Character Ranked Worst To Best

Which Greendale students were most worthy of six seasons and a movie?!

It seems wrong to call Community an underground hit, as the Dan Harmon show amassed an impressive six seasons - albeit without a movie - and garnered a huge fan following. With that being said, it's never considered to be a top contender in sitcom history. But, it certainly should be, as the series played with the clichés of the genre so well, delivered on barrels of laughs and had one of the best leading casts any ensemble sitcom has ever seen.

Part of what made the study group such great characters was how they played against sitcom archetypes. The set formula of characters was there, such as the motherly one, the hard worker and the egotist, but they only took the ingredients from these clichés and set out to bake a different cake entirely. This gave the show such a distinct identity and made each role memorable.

Sorting these characters based on their humour, position in the show, and development is an incredibly tough task, as they all brought something unique, and each character can be considered a fan-favourite in their own right. However, when looking closely, some do better than others.

9. Shirley Bennett

It's heart-breaking to see Shirley at the bottom of this list, but sadly, it makes sense. Yvette Nicole Brown did a fantastic job with the character, as she took a role that could have been very flat and turned her into a loving part of the series. Sadly there are a few drawbacks to her character that cause her to lag behind the others.

First, come the positives, and there's a fair few for her. As the surrogate mother of the group, she was always very loving and supportive, which made her such a loveable part of the show. However, there was a darker side to her that came from her passive aggression, anger issues and obsessive - arguably bigoted - religious values.

Despite these exciting character points, she was let down by the fact that she lacked personality or development outside of her archetype. Of all the characters in the show, she's easily the one who changed the least as she mainly remained as the caring motherly figure throughout the show.

Shirley gets points for being so wholesome, but her humour and character wasn't as strong as the others.
