Doctor Who: 14 Cool Details Steven Moffat Just Revealed About The Day Of The Doctor
Turns out John Hurt was secretly a comedy genius.
Even though it feels like it only happened a year or two ago, 2020 will, unbelievably, mark seven years since Doctor Who celebrated its 50th anniversary.
There was so much excitement surrounding the occasion due to the fact that special episode The Day Of The Doctor was set to unite David Tennant's and Matt Smith's Doctors, and Who fans the world over will always remember those days with immense fondness. Also, thankfully, the episode itself lived up to the hype surrounding it.
And so, in an effort to spread some joy in these times of global crisis, former Doctor Who showrunner (and Day Of The Doctor screenwriter) Steven Moffat recently took to Twitter to participate in a watch-along of the 50th special, allowing fans of the show to come together and relive a fraction of the buzz that was felt back in 2013.
And as an added bonus, Moffat also revealed some brand-new behind-the-scenes details about the production of the episode, from alternate scenes to cut jokes, and a bit of insight into how the final draft of the script came together.
He even created an original scene specifically for the watch-along, so let's start there...
14. Strax Returns! (Sort Of)
Ahead of the rewatch event, we learned that Moffat had written an all-new short scene - featuring a "much-loved Doctor Who character" - which would serve as an introduction to the anniversary episode.
Naturally, as soon as this news was revealed, fans started speculating about what the scene might look like, and which character would be making an appearance. In the end, we learned that it was Strax, the combat-loving Sontaran who assisted the Eleventh Doctor on several occasions, and also helped the Twelfth Doctor ease into his regeneration.
Due to the fact that most people are currently isolated in their homes, the production values on this scene weren't exactly of a AAA quality, but nonetheless, it was a fun little video that poked fun at current showrunner Chris Chibnall's recent decisions with the show ("This [The Day Of The Doctor] was the story that changed everything... unless it didn't. It's very unclear"), while also sneaking in a joke about the hoarding of toilet paper, something that a lot of idiots have been doing as of late.
Plus, Dan Starkey even returned as Strax! And that's always good news.
