For the purposes of this article, I will mostly refer to each Doctor by his actors' name, rather than their number, and usually I am talking about the writing, companions, themes, and onscreen behaviour of the character, rather than the skill of the actor. As a long-term Doctor Who fan, and a major David Tennant fan, I cried myself to sleep after watching most episodes featuring the 11th Doctor, one Matt Smith. Most of my complaints fell into two categories - either he was too much like David Tennant in the way he spoke or behaved, or he wasn't enough like David Tennant. As the series went on, my initial hatred of him abated, yet the fact still remained - he just wasn't in the same league as Tennant or Christopher Eccleston, the two Doctors I - as a child of the primarily of the 2006 series onward - have the most experience with. It wasn't that Matt wasn't a good actor, it wasn't that he didn't portray the Doctor well. It was more like he wasn't portraying the Doctor at all. Eccleston was an old warrior, Tennant was a changed man with a dark side, and Smith was something else. Here's four ways Peter Capaldi will be better than Matt Smith;
