As Series 9 of Doctor Who is fast approaching, it's time to take a look back at just what has made the 12th Doctor so popular. Peter Capaldi's interpretation of the iconic role was, initially, met with reservations from fans and critics alike. Claims of being rude, gruff, and alienating flew around thick and fast, however, it didn't take long for these to be buried under the shouts of adoration and praise for Capaldi's daring and refreshing portrayal of the Time Lord. While it's true that Capaldi can be prickly and, at times, rude - he's every bit the same Doctor that fans all know and love. Fans have been quick to point out the incredibly clever mix of old and new tropes that Capaldi has instilled in his performance, while simultaneously creating something entirely original. Capaldi is nothing short of stunning in the role. He is, at times, unpredictable yet familiar and while it's easy to understand the certain degree of animosity his Doctor inspires in members of the audience, it must also be noted that legions of fans around the world have taken the twelfth Doctor to their collective hearts.
