The eighth and final season of Game of Thrones is now so close you can almost taste it. We're less than a week away from what is arguably the TV event of the decade, and it's time to cram in as much last minute rewatching as possible.

That brings us to Season 6, which is when - after Season 5 made a lot of changes - the show went almost fully off-book. There were still a couple of plotlines to adapt (a bit of Arya in Braavos, Jaime at Riverrun), but for the most part the showrunners, D.B Weiss and David Benioff, were now out on their own ahead of George R.R. Martin's still unfinished A Song of Ice and Fire series.

Coming off the back of a less-than-great fifth season, Season 6 looked to get things back on track while pivoting towards the endgame. It had to bring Jon Snow back from the dead, and deliver a lot of payoff. A lot of characters would return, and even more would burn, as things really heated up in one of the show's finest seasons. Looking back now, there's an awful lot to pick up on ahead of Season 8.
