JK Rowling Set To Write Doctor Who

By Matt Aspin /

With the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who fast approaching the rumour mill is working over time with tales of who and who will not be making appearance in the landmark episode, due to be screened later this year. However, what many newer fans don't realise is there's so much more to the Doctor Who Universe than just the TV show, and we here at What Culture have some very exciting news for you. The BBC has announced that the long running series of Doctor Who novels will be getting their very own 50th anniversary celebration in the shape of 11 top children's writers bringing to life their very own yarns about the man in the blue police box, and sat at the top of the list - according to sources at Hypable.com - is none other than kids book royalty JK Rowling. Y'know, the woman who wrote Harry Potter? In their official statement the BBC offered the following tease:

"We are delighted to have 11 sensational children's authors involved in the series, all bringing an individual style, imagination and interpretation to their eshort tribute to The Doctor. This is a who's who of children's fiction coming together to celebrate the much-loved Doctor Who."

The books, being described as eshorts, will each feature one of the incarnations of the Doctor starting with the original William Hartnell version that made his screen début way back in 1963. In typical fashion, the show's writer Stephen Moffat has remained tight lipped about who's actually on the list, but with the first reveal scheduled tomorrow (Monday January 7th) he wont be able to stay quiet for too much longer. With the show being something of a British institution it is a safe guess that the names on the list will also be the best of British, and who better than JK? Other names being suggested by various sites include Anthony Horrowitz, Philip Pullman and Kate Thompson. Whether any of these names actually appear on the list remains to be seen, however for fans of the Timelord there's no better way to celebrate his 50th anniversary than with such a who€™s who of children€™s fiction coming together to celebrate the much-loved Doctor. Which incarnation would you want your favourite children's author to tackle?
