Netflix's Stranger Things Review: 8 Ups And 3 Downs
Netflix + King + Spielberg = Success.
By now, this show is probably your new Netflix obsession.
Stranger Things is the service's latest original series, and it seems destined to become an instant summer hit (indeed, it's already generating a lot of hype). Created by the Duffer bros. Matt and Ross, the show is a supernatural mystery wrapped in all manner of 80s influences, leaning heavily on the likes of King, Spielberg, and Carpenter.
Nostalgia plays a part in its appeal, but it's much broader than that. The show has some great performances, and delivers just the kind of mystery that will have you binge-watching all eight episodes in no time at all.
The series is also notable for being headlined by Winona Ryder, a starring role after a slew after quiet supporting parts. She steps up to the plate, but isn't even the best thing about the cast.
Set in Indiana in 1982, it focuses on the mysterious disappearance of Will, son of Ryder's Joyce, and the subsequent attempts by her and his friends to find him, with multiple obstacles along the way and an ever-expanding mystery that will suck you in and leave you desperate for more. It's a fun throwback, but a hugely entertaining series in its own right, and here's a look at what it got right (and what it didn't). (Contains spoilers.)
