Star Trek: 5 Best & Worst Guest Star Appearances

By Neil Cochrane /

It stands to reason that if a franchise spawns 12 films and 5 television series that every once in a while you're going to look back, maybe watch a few episodes from 20 years ago and say "Holy sh*t, isn't that Teri Hatcher operating the transporter and then sleeping with the trashy looking alien loner who she beamed aboard??", or something to that effect. Star Trek, as one of the most expansive franchises in TV history, has been littered with a barrage of stars both pre and post stardom, including Kirstie Alley (Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan), Christian Slater & Kim Cattrall (Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country) and who could forget that playful little alien scamp running around the Enterprise in the 1993 Next Generation episode "Dark Page". You may know her better as Mary-Jane Watson in the Spider-Man films, a.k.a Kirsten Dunst. While a great many of these guest appearances will live long and prosper in the memories of Trekkies (or Trekkers to be politically correct) there are also quite a few that stand out for all the wrong reasons, whether they made us want to rip out our eyeballs and shove them into our ear holes, or they just brought about a good old fashioned cringe worthy face-palm. Lets kick off with the latter...

5 Worst Guest Star Appearances on Star Trek

5. Penny Johnson

Playing Kasidy Yates, the love interest of Captain Sisko in Deep Space Nine, Penny would show up from time to time to remind us of the benefits of being single, whether it be getting herself into all kinds of trouble through her futile attempts at Captaining a crappy little ship, or nagging Sisko for indulging his desire to be the messiah to the Bajoran people. HOW DARE HE! Such a role was undoubtedly difficult to portray on a semi-part-time basis, nevertheless her droll, delayed speech is enough to make the top 5. Often she'd be asked a question and I'd have a whole 5 seconds to theorise as to what her response will be. If you recall her ship being seized by Klingons in the DS9 Episode "The Way of The Warrior", Sisko (after convincing the Klingons to get lost) asked the simple question "Is everyone alright?". The response was so drawn out it made me wonder if Penny had forgotten her line and just made one up to fit the scene. "Every......one....is...............fine" ("Phew, got away with that one" said Penny's brain). The lights are on but nobody's home. Sorry Penny.
