Star Trek: Starfleet's Most Badass Ships

By Baz Greenland /

Star Trek Into Darkness was a good film. Maybe not as good as its predecessor, but I enjoyed it. I enjoyed it a lot. Though it does make me think, was it Star Trek anymore? In my opinion, that€™s the biggest issue with Star Trek at the movies. It loses the science and exploration of the original premise. Perhaps only Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan, great action sequences aside, succeeds with the Genesis planet storyline out of all the films in Trek cannon. And I understand why Star Trek films have to be different. They have to be action packed, with over-the-top villains, great drama and a threat credible enough to make you believe the crew of the Enterprise (original or Next Generation) may not survive. They have to be something closer to Star Wars to appeal to a larger audience. What id does allow is for us to witness some truly bad-ass ships on screen. And dare I say it; Star Trek may have more badass ships than Star Wars? But over the various films and television series, how many of those €˜badass€™ ships have belonged to the good guys? Not much. You think of badass ships of Star Trek and you come up with Klingon Birds of Prey, Borg Cubes, Romulan War Birds Jem€™Hadar fighters and (the-Babylon-5-Vorlon-rip-off-but-still-cool) Species 8472. Over the years, the good guys have had a fighting chance though. Here are some of the best and badass ships of Starfleet that have strived to take on the big bads above. Is your favourite ship on this list? Let me know. Quick note: This article does contain spoilers for Star Trek Into Darkness. Go and watch the film and then come back and take a look!
