Just when you think there is a little bit of light at the end of the tunnel, things take a dark turn for our protagonist. Yes, The Last Ceremony is without a doubt the darkest episode of The Handmaid's Tale yet, as the true horrors of Gilead once again come to light.

First thing's first: this episode is not the Season 2 finale. As the first season of the hit series was only ten episodes long, many people have been commenting online thinking that The Last Ceremony was to serve as the second season's final instalment, but this isn't the case. Hulu renewed The Handmaid's Tale for a 13-episode second season, so we've still got three more episodes to go. That is, if you're fit for it after The Last Ceremony.

A lot happens this week, as Serena grows impatient waiting on the arrival of 'her' child. Things take a turn for the worse when June begins to go into labour, only for it to be a false alarm. Elsewhere, we hear rumblings of Emily being appointed to yet another post. Some things never change.

With the finale mere weeks away, The Handmaid's Tale took us to some new highs this week, as our protagonist experienced some new terrifying lows.
