The Handmaid's Tale Season 2: 6 Ups & 2 Downs From 'The Last Ceremony'

Ups...

6. Emily's Rebellion

We've been hoping for a substantial appearance from Emily for quite some time now, and the disgruntled handmaid finally made her way back to our screens in this week's episode.

As the episode was titled The Last Ceremony, you would be forgiven for thinking the title was referring to the opening sequence which saw Emily's commander have a heart attack after completing the 'ceremony'. But that's not the reason for the name at all (more on that later). Still, it's a wonderful scene, one that highlights Emily's lack of interest in Gilead and its laws.

Despite her commander's impending demise, the former Colony worker remained unperturbed, and told her mistress that she was unable to get help because chances of conception are better if she remained on her back afterwards. Brilliant.

But it's the kick that feels just in this situation. As much as June has been put through the ringer, Emily is arguably the handmaid that has lost the most. And as she stepped over her commander - or let's just say it how it is: her abuser - she kicked him in the side, before stomping down on his crotch with all her might. Hell hath no fury.
