10 Biggest Regrets From Goldberg's WWE Career
Ten moments Goldberg wishes he could spear and jackhammer out of his memory.
With Goldberg’s WWE contract up, is this the last we’ll see of “Da Man” in Vince McMahon’s promotion?
Don’t bet on it. Big Bill is one of a dwindling number of legends who can still just about go, so don’t be surprised if Vince puts in a call next time he needs to pop a rating or pad out a Saudi Arabian show.
Plus, WWE has more money to offer than ever, with everyone from Shaun Michaels to, apparently, Steve Austin eventually succumbing to the lure of the mighty dollar. It would take a strong will to say no to another big payday.
Besides, why would Goldberg want to call time on an objectively successful career? On the face of it, his WWE runs have been a triumph. He’s a Hall of Famer, multi-time champion and remains a legitimate quarter-hour draw. All this while continuing to work an ultra-limited in-ring style that modern workers should have left looking obsolete.
His WWE tenure has not been without its disappointments, however, and time isn’t on his side. Against Roman Reigns, he looked like a man wrestling through treacle and he won’t want to add to his list of regrets. Here are the things Goldberg should consider before taking Vince's call...
10. His Summerslam 2021 Match With Bobby Lashley
Goldberg’s SummerSlam clash with Bobby Lashley was one of his longest bouts since his 2016 return, but you don’t get your money’s worth out of Goldberg by putting him in longer, competitive matches. At under seven and a half minutes, this still wasn’t exactly Omega/Danielson but, winning or losing, Bill works best in short, sharp bomb fests.
Goldberg was still objectively a draw at this point and not a bad scalp for a WWE champion to claim but equally a large section of the fanbase were tiring of his returns after a couple of dud matches. Big Bill clearly felt he had something to prove.
Bobby doesn’t come with similar baggage but neither man came out of the bout looking great. Lashley did his best to help Goldberg look like the monster of old but at one point looked scarily close to breaking his neck for his troubles. MVP’s interference made Lashley look like he couldnt get the job done. Meanwhile, the referee stoppage made Goldberg look like an old man who can no longer cut it.
The pair would somewhat redeem themselves with a Saudi Arabian rematch but even then it was more a case of, “What a relief” rather than, “what a thrill.”
