October has always been a month packed full of stimulating sports and entertainment events. Whether it's the World Series and Major League Baseball's playoffs, the crux of the NFL regular season, the thrills and chills of Halloween, or the start of the NHL and NBA seasons, it's generally an exciting time.

Professional wrestling had become a part of premium fall television in 1989 when WCW presented the first Halloween Havoc, but it would take WWE another six years before they offered a pay-per-view in October. WWE may have had a late start, but since then, they've more than made up for it by the quality of matches their October event has included.

The event that began as In Your House from Winnipeg has undergone several changes since its original incarnation over 20 years ago. Whether the event was titled No Mercy, Judgment Day, Bragging Rights, or most recently Hell In A Cell, WWE's October PPV has played host to some of the most memorable matches in WWE history.

But of all the great October main events, which ones are worth re-watching? Which matches featured the most exciting performances? Which matches were the best?

As we enter the tenth month and the upcoming dual WWE Network offerings of SmackDown's No Mercy and RAW's Hell In A Cell, let's take a look back and remember the following 10 main events produced by Vince McMahon that set the standard for October WWE wrestling.

10. D-Generation X Vs. Legacy - Hell In A Cell Match (Hell In A Cell 2009)

Starting off the list is a match often forgotten about in terms of October WWE lore: the Hell In A Cell tag-team match between D-Generation X (Shawn Michaels & Triple H) against Legacy (Cody Rhodes & Ted DiBiase, Jr).

Even as Hell In A Cell has come to be a yearly event for WWE since 2009, tag-team contests held inside the roofed cage have not been a common occurrence. One rare exception was In 2009, when Triple H and Randy Orton's never-ending feud transitioned into Triple H and Shawn Michaels' attempting to thwart off Orton cronies, DiBiase and Rhodes.

This match began outside the cell as Legacy attacked DX as they were making their entrance. Triple H was locked outside of the structure for much of the contest as Rhodes and DiBiase targeted Michaels' knee inside the ring. After utilising bolt-cutters to open the cage door, The Game returned to the ring and turned the tables on Legacy, this time leaving DiBiase stranded on the outside.

The match concluded after a super-finish - a simultaneous combo of Triple H's sledgehammer head shot and Shawn's Sweet Chin Music - making it good enough for the ten spot on this list.
