Speaking on the rumoured return of the Hardy Boyz to the WWE, Jim Ross stated: "Interesting speculation online that the Hardy Boys might be back on the WWE radar. I have no idea if this is true or not but I don't think it is a bad idea if they were utilized much like the Dudley's have been lately." His positivity is understandable. The Hardys are one of the most popular tag teams in wrestling history, but a return to the current PG climate could prove tricky for the promotion to navigate. Jeff's previous struggles with drug abuse are well-documented, but brother Matt also has a chequered history - both in and out of the ring. Matt may be able to slam a tornado and dry up a sea, but he seems to have trouble keeping controversial incidents out of his personal life and wrestling career. Here are the ten such incidents - moments the WWE will be undeniably keen for fans to forget, especially if a return is indeed on the horizon.
10. His Terrible Feud With Kane
Matt's initial run with the WWE can be broadly divided into two phases: his immensely successful tag team run with Jeff, during which the pair won six Tag Team Championships, and his later heel run under the egotistical 'Version 1' gimmick. However, in mid-2004 Hardy was part of one of the most cringeworthy, controversial, and messily-booked feuds in the company's history. Kane was in the midst of a monster heel run, having unmasked the year before, and began to stalk Lita with the intention of impregnating her. It was an immensely uncomfortable angle, for obvious reasons. At SummerSlam 2004, Matt lost to Kane in a 'Till Death Do Us Part' match (no, really), which resulted in Lita being forced into a demonic wedding with the Big Red Machine. Common sense would dictate that the angle could be saved by having Matt crash the wedding and rescuing his girlfriend, but Kane easily chokeslammed him off the ramp through a stack of tables, before saying "I do". Matt was then given time off to recover from major knee surgery, but was released in April 2005 without returning to the storyline. As if the whole thing wasn't ridiculous enough, the real drama was about to begin...
