9. Lita's Affair With Edge

The most over period of Matt's career actually began after he was cut from the WWE, the result of very real backstage drama - a highly controversial incident the WWE would certainly not wish to revisit in the modern, largely kid-friendly climate. While still in a relationship with Matt, Lita began an affair with Edge. Hardy, understandably upset, leaked the story on his personal website and was immediately released by the company, but was boosted by an organic wave of fan support. Hardy's supporters railed against the injustice of the situation, and began chanting Matt's name incessantly at events, while directing considerable vitriol towards both Edge and Lita. In July, the WWE eventually relented and re-hired Matt, booking him into a potentially molten-hot storyline with Edge. The feud seemed a guaranteed money-maker, and seemed to write itself. Surely they couldn't screw this one up...
