Professional wrestling and sports entertainment are words that have become synonymous with the global brand of WWE. For better or worse, when most people think of wrestling, they think of WWE. However, as many wrestling fans know, there have been a plethora of promotions and territories over the years. The history of this form of entertainment dates back well before the foundation of the WWE and its Federation predecessor. Because of wrestling€™s long history, there have been a great number of promotions -- both large and small -- that have attempted to attain their share of the sports entertainment audience. Companies like World Championship Wrestling, ECW, and TNA have all succeeded to varying degrees. However, there are countless other promotions out there that have not achieved the same level of success. Some of the following promotions are what€™s known as independent companies. Others were attempts at making a mark on the national or universal scene. The one thing they all have in common, however, is their relative obscurity. While you, personally, may be aware of some of these promotions, they never achieved the same heights as WWE and its direct competitors. A small few of the following promotions are still active today and may, in fact, be building strong followings, but there€™s always room to grow.
