These are strange, strange times. The coronavirus pandemic has thrown a lot of things up into the air, and the sight of empty arena wrestling shows is still jarring, to say the least. Everybody expected change and upheaval, but mass releases?

In what was being portrayed as a cost-cutting exercise, WWE has decided to release a huge number of talents, covering everything from main roster stars to development talent via referees, writers, trainers and very, very handsome Bulgarian men. It isn’t difficult to rationalise the decision, but it is one that makes Vince McMahon look even more callous than usual, which is saying something.

These fragile times make it almost certain that AEW isn’t going to be signing anybody any time soon, but it is nigh on impossible to look at some of the names on the released list and not think of how they might thrive in AEW. Tony Khan’s wrestling endeavour is still extremely young, and an injection of experience and talent is always going to be a good thing.
