There's a saying in pro wrestling circles that there's often more drama behind the curtain than in front of it, and that genuine tension is every bit as valuable as the stuff whipped up by writers to entertain fans.

Real-world relationships breaking down, intense disagreements, very real personal demons and even grumbles between performer and management can all be played out for the cameras if there's any money to be made from things. Making cash is what it's all about; pretty much nothing is sacred.

That's why, when it suits WWE, reality has stirred imaginations (just like ex-Beatle Lennon suggested) and become part of a fictional narrative. The real issues are taken, splashed with some creative colour and presented on television just like any other storyline, only with one key difference: they're tinged with truth.

When fiction is made more interesting by fact, angles come to life and can seem more important to fans as a result. That spotlight isn't always a good thing though, and it can actually be detrimental or exploitative...
