WWE sprang the King of the Ring on us from out of nowhere, which marked its return after a five year hiatus with a two night tournament. It started on Raw and concluded the next night on a WWE Network special before the Smackdown taping. The final saw Bad News Barrett claim the throne after hitting Neville with the Bullhammer. The King of the Ring presented a few possibilities, with some that were interesting and others cringe-worthy. Bringing the tournament back to elevate a new and exciting star like Neville would have been okay in the eyes of many fans, while wasting it on R-Truth would have left many frustrated. The WWE went with Bad News Barrett - a good worker, both on the microphone and in the ring, who the fans like and could use the rub of a King of the Ring triumph after an abysmally-booked run with the Intercontinental title.
