WWE: 4 Missed Clues That The Undertaker's Streak Was Ending

By Martin Rowe /

For over two decades The Undertaker's WrestleMania winning streak was a lone constant in an industry in continuous flux. Year after year, WrestleMania after WrestleMania, the WWE fans witnessed one of the greatest professional wrestlers in The Undertaker add to his WrestleMania winning streak and with it chronicle one of the most phenomenal accolades in wrestling history. Few actually thought that the streak would be broken, with many assuming that its end would naturally coincide with The Undertaker's inevitable retirement from the squared circle. After all if legends like Shawn Michaels, Ric Flair and Triple H had failed in their attempt at defeating The Undertaker at WrestleMania, what real threat did lesser decorated contenders pose to the survival of the streak? It made sense that CM Punk would lose to The Undertaker at WrestleMania 29 and, for many, it made even more sense that Brock Lesnar would fall victim to the streak at WrestleMania 30. The assumption in the inevitability of The Undertaker extending his WrestleMania winning streak at WrestleMania 30 was an unconfirmed but widely accepted truth. Misguided or not, many fans, bloggers and commentators had such an unflappable belief in The Undertaker defeating Lesnar, that many had moved on to talk about The Undertaker's WrestleMania opponents in years to come. John Cena, The Rock and Sting were just a few names thrown about in complete ignorance of the impending Lesnar bout that in a widely accepted view was a short term addition and insignificant threat to the continuation of the streak. Fans were so adamant that history would repeat itself as it had done for the previous two decades, that money was wagered and bets cast in an assumed guarantee that WrestleMania 30 would feature the 22nd consecutive WrestleMania victory for the 'Demon From Death Valley' Yet on April 6th 2014 history did not repeat itself, constancy did not continue and millions of fans were left open mouthed in absolute shock as a laboured Lesnar streak match concluded with a clear Lesnar victory over the man who had seemed invincible at 'The Show of Shows.' The WrestleMania audience fell silent interspersed with angry chants of "Bulls**t" but by and large as Lesnar's hand was raised in victory the WWE Universe was forced to accept the 'confirmed' truth that indeed, even in the world of professional wrestling, nothing lasts forever. In the days since the demise of the streak fans continue to reel from the shock, unexpectedness and unforeseen nature of what must surely go down as the most shocking WrestleMania moment in WrestleMania history. Yet whilst the streak ending might very well go down in the chronicles of wrestling history as 'the most shocking WrestleMania moment', in hindsight it is clear that it is most certainly not as unforeseen or as unexpected as many would like to believe. Of course hindsight is a wonderful thing that can be used to find clues where none exist but it is clear that in hindsight there were four significantly missed, overlooked and ignored clues that alluded to the possible demise of the streak to Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania 30.
