10 Best Comic Runs Of All Time

3. Saga Of The Swamp Thing: Alan Moore

When Alan Moore took over Swamp Thing, he immediately revamped the title, even going as far as altering the entire origin of the character. The changes Moore made and the manner in which he told them made Swamp Thing one of DC's most interesting characters. Recognizing Moore's incredible talent, DC provided Moore minimal restraint in his story, which resulted in Swamp Thing being the first DC title to not to be given the Comics Code Authority stamp.

Within his run, Alan Moore wrote stories about romantic, social, political, and environmental issues all with a horror comics backdrop with locations that span from Hell all the way into space. Rarely in comics is it possible to tell long running stories without the traditional square jawed hero, but Swamp Thing seemingly does the impossible by having resonant, emotional tales being told with a monstrous god as the protagonist.

As with the majority of Moore's writing, this run challenges readers in a way that most comic books never attempt. The story does not deal with absolutes of right and wrong, but exists somewhere in between. The depth of the humanity that Swamp Thing finds as the run progresses captivates readers and makes them question their own morality.

As with all great comic runs, Swamp Thing is graced with gorgeous art. Stephen Bissette and John Totleben provide the majority of the initial art in this run, setting a primal tone for the series, which is perfectly in sync with Moore, enhancing the mood of the title. While the Saga of the Swamp Thing exists within the DC Universe, it has its own deep mythology that supassess almost any other comic run.
