10 Best First Comic Book Issues From This Week (Dec 5, 2018)
10. Immortal Hulk: The Best Defense #1 AND Namor: The Best Defense #1
Al Ewing has been knocking it out of the park on the main Immortal Hulk series, and this is ultimately an extension of that series. It acts as a means to bring readers who haven't been keeping tabs on his run up to speed on the character, and primarily how the now-forefront split personalities of the Hulk and Bruce Banner have developed. It's dark, sophisticated and grittier than you'd anticipate from a Marvel title as of late, and it's why it's developed so much buzz.
Chip Zdarsky dives headfirst into Part 2 of The Best Defense with Namor. While he is still an arrogant, bitter, pointy-eared jackass, there's an intricacy to the Sub-Mariner's portrayal that develops a well-rounded picture of the character. Yes, the Atlanteans are going to war with the surface world AGAIN, but there's actually a discussion surrounding why and Namor doesn't emerged unscathed.
Both of these books are tied by one massive thing: they show the characters in a mostly solo environment building to an explosive "they don't belong on a team!" feeling that hopefully comes to a head in a couple of weeks with The Defenders: The Best Defense.
