10. The Reincarnated Samurai Thing - Various

Even someone who hasn't read anything about the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and their various shenanigans still likely has a pretty strong idea of what their origin story is. They were regular turtles, mutated into radical teenage warriors, and that's just a fact that most of humanity is aware of - hell, it's even in the name if you don't.

But it was decided that this origin story could do with a bit of sprucing, and thus, in the 2012 IDW run, things got just a little more wild.

Added to this backstory was the fact that the turtles are in fact the reincarnated souls of a family of ancient samurai warriors. The family are murdered by an evil warriors who would go on to be reborn as Shredder, meaning that the entire ongoing war between the characters is one that is in fact centuries old.

Given the origin story of the turtles wasn't exactly normal to start with, it's frankly impressive that people managed to make it weirder.
