Marvel's Agents Of SHIELD TV series has had a...mixed reception, shall we say. The two biggest criticisms people have had after the show's first season was that it didn't really make the most of existing in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with the superheroes from the films (and the vast history of the comic books) appearing rarely, and that Marvel didn't seem to be supporting the show at all in their funnybooks. You'd think both would be no-brainers - the Marvel Universe is chocka with wild and wonderful characters, so why would you just stick with these regular spy folk? And why the heck isn't there an Agents Of SHIELD tie-in book? Well both questions got...sort of answered as SDCC thanks to the reveal of the Agents Of SHIELD comic book, which will see the likes of the show's Agents Fitz, Simmons, Melinda May and Skye joining Phil Coulson as legit parts of Marvel's comic universe. This new series will be penned by veteran superhero writer Mark Waid with a rotating series of artists telling done-in-one, complete stories in each issue. We're pretty stoked to see the rest of the SHIELD crew join Coulson, who was drafted into the comic book continuity after his surprising popularity in the Avengers movie, and hopefully the book will serve as a way to convince fanboys to give the TV show another chance. Or it might do the opposite since, from the sound of it, Agents Of SHIELD the comic will do everything the TV show doesn't. To be fair, stuff that TV show can't, due to budgetary and rights issues: each story will see the core team employing the services of superheroes from throughout the Marvel Universe, with the teaser image seeing Coulson and co flanked by the Fantastic Four, various Avengers, X-Men and Spider-Man. Ace TV characters teaming up with actual superheroes? Yep, sign us up ta.
