A member of Professor Pyg's Circus of Strange, Mister Toad even beats his pig master in terms of oddity. Unlike Professor Pyg, Mister Toad is, quite literally, a toad, being based on the character of the same name from The Wind in the Willows. This amphibian isn't as friendly as his inception would suggest, but he's also not exactly the scariest criminal in Gotham. But there's a difference between lame and laughable, and Mister Toad soars for laughable from the very start. He's a pretty useless henchman, but there are a lot of useless henchman in comics. There are a lot of animals in comics, too, but a toad with a top hat kind of ruins the point of him being an animal. He's also supposed to have a cockney accent, which really pushes the character's laughable nature over the edge. An anthropomorphic gangster-toad with a cockney accent isn't exactly a recipe for the most terrifying Batman villain ever, or even a terrifying villain at all for that matter. But fans don't need to worry about being tortured with his appearance in the comics anymore. After Batman and Robin defeat Professor Pyg's Circus of Strange, they find Mister Toad dead holding a domino. He may never actually have been scary, but he certainly was one of the creepiest baddies to ever cross Batman's path.
