The character Luke Cage, or Power Man as he's also known, was introduced in Luke Cage: Hero for Hire (1972) and was inspired by blaxploitation films that were popular in the 1970s. He has super strength and durability after an experiment was performed on him while he was in prison.

Initially, Iron Fist and Power Man were paired together because both their stand-alone series were losing popularity. The team-up allowed the characters to step away from their gimmicky and limiting roots and develop in more complex ways.

The dynamic between the two just works. They fight as a fierce duo and have each other's backs. Danny helps Luke strengthen his fighting, Luke teaches Danny skills he missed out on (due to living in a mystical monastery) like driving.

Power Man and Iron Fist (1978) ran until 1986, and the team-up was loved by fans. Since then the two have continued to fight crime together and have had their series revived in 2011 and again in 2016, meaning both are now pretty synonymous.
