3. The Chosen
Of all the alternate Captain Americas out there, the one from The Chosen is among the most interesting.
Set in the wake of 9/11 and the subsequent invasion of Afghanistan, the book follows a private in the US Marine Corps, called James Newman, as he navigates his first tour of duty. Soon, the spirit of Captain America actually enters the battlefield and acts as his guardian angel, while the real Captain America - now old, with his heroing days long behind him - lies ill in a hospital bed.
The story actually ends with the Captain's death, but between his arrival in Afghanistan and that pivotal moment, a whole host of weird things start to happen. Cap even seems to embody Newman's body in order to get his unit out safely, and though it's an interesting way of conveying Cap's unique meaning to America, having him take on these kinds of powers is something of a departure, with the US government having devised a device that allows Rogers to project himself anywhere in the planet.
