Amongst Spider-Man fans, Gwen Stacy is/was often considered to be a Saint: many of these individuals would have the Catholic Church canonize Gwen Stacy in a heart beat. To this very day, Gwens death at the hands of the Green Goblin is one of the most poignant and heart-wrenching moments within the Spider-Man cannon. And then J. Michael Straczynski came along and crapped all over it. Originally, Straczynskis plan was for Peter to have unknowingly fathered two children Gwen; however, yet again the Marvel big-wigs stepped in and decided that having two grown children would age Spider-Man too much. So Straczynski cooks up the idea that Norman Osborn fathered the kids, kept them locked away, and secretly trained them to kill Spider-Man. Yes, this is for real: the young and saintly Gwen Stacy did the horizontal tango with the creepily old and psychotic Norman Osborn. God bless comic books. It would be an understatement to say that this retcon was a flop, as fans were outraged by the defilement of one of Marvels most beloved female characters. This story not destroyed the Peter and Gwens relationship it also maligned her character. Gwen Stacys death went from a tragedy to someone getting her just-deserts. It was absolutely horrible. This retcon received such a poor reception among fans that the affair was never mentioned again; however, it technically still remains as a part of the Spider-Man cannon.
