Creators: Cullen Bunn & Vanessa R Del Ray Read if you like: Slender Man, The Strain, True Detective Current Issue: 2 With a book like The Empty Man, there's a definite case "what you don't know, can kill you". To put it another way, writer Cullen Bunn knows that there's no greater fear than that of the Unknown, and is drip-feeding information to the reader accordingly. What the Empty Man is, no one knows. It's a virus; a pandemic; a plague; a religion; a mass hallucination; a serial killer. It could be all of those things and more, but what is certain is that suddenly, inexplicably and fatally, people contract a madness that consumes them and those around them, causing them to commit such carnal and barbaric acts that it defies all logic. Issue one delves into examples of the Empty Man at work, and it's only half way through that we're introduced to the detectives assigned to investigate the cases, of which every one is uniquely different yet equally macabre. Through them we're introduced to the myriad cults and obsessive followers that the Empty Man has gathered, and only in issue two do we start to even understand what's happening to the victims. If you couldn't guess, this is a dark, gruesome murder mystery with a supernatural edge and claustrophobic atmosphere. The plot is slowly building but the narrative is fast-paced, realistic and fresh. Fans of horror and mystery will love this.
