10 Indie Comics That Deserve Your Attention

3. Southern Bastards (Image Comics)

Creators: Jason Aaron & Jason Latour Read if you like: Revenge movies, Gran Torino, Deliverance, Harry Brown Current issue: 3 This book has a character that's all on its own, and an atmosphere that practically drips off every page. Set in the backwaters of the Deep South (birthplace and stomping ground of both the writer and artist), Southern Bastards follows Earl Tubb; a man in his late 50's/early 60's who returns to his family home to settle up the estate following the death of his father, Sheriff "Big Bert" Tubb. Only there for a day or two at most, Earl finds himself getting drawn back into Craw County, Alabama after finding out what's happened to his hometown since his old daddy passed away. This series is another slow-burner that builds the world so completely that you (much like Earl himself) find yourself getting sucked in and dragged down by a town corrupted and twisted by years of manipulation, manipulation that Earl finds is squarely at the hands of one dangerous character: Coach Boss. For those of you that love a good revenge movie, or anything starring a main protagonist that's "just getting too old for this" then this is for you. An amazing study of a man pushed to the edge and choosing what's right over what's sensible, a man against the odds - Southern Bastards is a truly gripping book.
