10 Things You Didn't Know About The Riddler

3. He Is Not Really Called Edward Nigma

E.Nigma is a great pun; sadly, this wasn€™t the name that DC€™s puzzle obsessed villain was born with. His real name in the comics is Edward Nashton, although when he took on the masked villain role of The Riddler he swiftly changed his name to Edward Nigma. This new name enabled him to break his links to his early childhood; he had an abusive father and an often absent mother, so it makes sense that the character would want to make a new start by getting rid of his family name and replacing it with something with a cryptic link. The Riddler is obsessed with clues, riddles and puzzles, so the fact that he included one in his name is mildly humorous as it completes the character. Even without the green suit and purple domino mask he is still completely surrounded by puzzles, giving the character a depth that is missing from many of Batman€™s many enemies.
