The character of Star-Lord AKA Peter Quill was completely unknown beyond avid comic book audiences until last year's Guardians of the Galaxy movie. He first appeared in 1976 in Marvel Preview #4 and has mostly been limited to appearances on the pages of comic books ever since. Marvel Studios took a huge risk even thinking about making a movie based on such an obscure cast of characters, but it paid off massively as the Marvel Cinematic Universe offering ended up as 2014's second highest-grossing movie - second only to Transformers: Age of Extinction - having amassed a worldwide gross of well over $700 million to date. Chris Pratt's brilliant and charismatic performance as Star-Lord was a huge contributing factor towards the movie's success and, as a result, interest in the Guardians of the Galaxy comics and the comic book version of the Star-Lord character increased enormously. Having been born on Earth, Peter Quill was almost immediately drawn to the stars, trained to become a NASA astronaut, and ended up fighting the forces of good in space alongside an unlikely group of allies - that pretty much everyone now knows about the character - but there is so much more to learn about him.
