10. Joker Shoots Barbara Gordon

Alan Moore's Killing Joke is one of the greatest stand-alone graphic novels of all time and it could easily fill up a shocking plot twists list all on its own.

After all, from the opening salvo, where it's revealed that it's not the Joker in his cell, all the way up to the end panels, where it seems that Batman finally snaps and kills him, this book is one amazing plot twist after the other. But the shooting of Barbara Gordon is such a shocking moment that it deserves to be on here more than any other example from the book.

It's the fact that it's so simple that makes it a truly jaw-dropping moment. While Jim goes through his scrapbook and Barbara brings him coffee there's a knock at the door. Thinking it's her friend, Colleen, showing up so they can go to yoga class, she answers it, only to find herself face to face with the Clown Prince of Crime.

Without a single word and just a chilling smile on his face, he fires the gun he has in his hand, shooting her clean through the spine.

What's even more impressive is that this became canon in Batman lore, as did nearly everything else in the book, and even though her career as Batgirl had come to an end, her time as the all-seeing Oracle had only just begun.
