9. Turning Carlie Cooper into Monster

Carlie Cooper, a New York City police detective and Peter€™s ex-girlfriend, might have frustrated long-time Spider-Man readers with the glacial pace in which she was conducting her investigation into the identity of the Superior Spider-Man, but that doesn€™t make the fate she suffered at the hands of the Green Goblin in Superior Spider-Man #25 the least bit defensible. While visiting Doctor Octopus€™s grave a few issues earlier, Carlie is kidnapped by the Goblin€™s hench-woman, Menace. She€™s tied up and tortured for information about Spider-Man€™s secret identity. When she refuses to talk, the Goblin doses her with super serum, leading to the creation of Monster. While it remains to be scene whether or not Carlie has truly transitioned to the side of evil, the physical and emotional pain she has been put through since being captured by the Green Goblin will likely have a long-lasting impact on the character, and given Peter€™s trademark issues with guilt and self-doubt, he€™s certain to blame himself for his former girlfriend€™s condition once he comes back from the dead in April.
