11. Apollo

Apollo is one of DC's most famous alternate Supermen. Situated in a universe without Krypton, Apollo doesn't share any of Clark Kent’s heritage but does share a number of Superman’s powers and characteristics, including super strength, super speed, invulnerability, heat vision as well using solar energy to maximise his powers.

Born a normal human being and enlisted as a US soldier, Apollo was bioengineered to be given powers, and later joined ‘The Authority,’ their world's version of the Justice League. During his run in The Authority, it becomes apparent that he did not adhere to Superman’s policy of always 'doing the right thing' at such times as when Apollo goes on revenge killings and also at one point melted a man’s head off of his body.

What truly sets Apollo apart is the fact he is one of the first openly gay superheroes in DC comics. Notably, Apollo’s husband is Midnighter, this universe’s Batman and a damn fine hero to boot.
