5. Mo (Dykes to Watch Out For)

Although I wish I had the chutzpah of Lois or the spiritual contentment of Sparrow, I think deep down I'm more like Mo, the main protagonist in Alison Bechdel's long-running strip Dykes to Watch Out For. Passionate yet overwhelmed, progressive yet pessimistic, and different yet strikingly familiar, throughout the narrative Mo is always questioning and evaluating what it is to be a lesbian in the modern world. Over the years she's voiced her concerns about gay pride marches, hetero-normative conformity, queer spaces, safe sex, hate crimes, and the stereotype of the traditional nuclear family. But I think the biggest question that Bechdel tries to address through Mo is this: Why do we categorise people as 'the Other', when at the end of the day, we're all just average Joes (or Mos) just trying to get by? As a straight/bicurious woman, I can't relate to Mo's lesbianism, but I sure as heck can relate to her unruly cats, anger at out of control corporations, and, unfortunately, the agony of asking for a trim and then walking out the hairdressers shaved like a Marine.
