6 Reasons Why Dark Nights: Metal #1 Rocks
Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo have done it again.
With the first issue now released from DC's summer comics event, Dark Nights: Metal, Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo are bringing the ideas of rock opera and heavy metal iconography to comics in a way that is both incredibly unexpected and incredibly needed.
And people love it.
There are plenty of different reasons for why this approach is so popular, beyond the simple fact that this is by two masters of the comics form getting to cut loose with the biggest characters of the DC Universe in a way that is a riotous amount of fun and joy and also twisted, crazy and a little dark.
Telling a story of the Justice League getting drawn into the mystery that Batman has been investigating for some time and learning of a 'Dark Multiverse' that is aiming to invade the main universe for reasons most nefarious (aren't they always), the potential for this to have just been some simple 'Dark Crisis' to add to DC's list of various other Crisises...Crisi? Crises? Yeah, Crises, that's it. The fact that it doesn't just become another simple "Oooh, things have gotten dark and terrible and the heroes too" makes for something wonderfully different.
There's undoubtedly hundreds of reasons why people have loved this new kind of event coming from one of the Big Two, but here's just a few that we've noticed in the first issue which makes Dark Nights: Metal #1 the most rock 'n' roll, action-packed, joyous event comic in a very, very long time.
6. It's Just Fun
Dark Nights remembers what comics can be: sheer, entertaining joy in a digestible format.
In its pages, we go from space to Earth, looking from the dawn of man to the present, and with characters from every corner of DC's storied and beloved universe. We get Batman riding dinosaurs, monsters, aliens and giant robot battlesuits.
It's overblown, crazy and heartfelt. It's the games you played as a kid put to the page. It's grabbing all the toys and saying let's have the biggest damn party we've ever had before.
Metal is just fun. It's a thrill ride and it's only just started, and who knows where it could go next.
That's why Metal rocks. The volume is turned up to 11 and it's time for comics to be joyous, riotous fun again.
