7 Comic Book Storylines That Would Make Epic Movies

By Matthew Fisher /

1. The Death Of Superman

Arguably the comic of the 90's. The Death of Superman was a comic book experience, and the pure, intangible feeling that it created back in 1992 was unbelievable. We all know the infamous story told by Dan Jurgens, where the Superman creative team would gather around and ask the question, "What do we do with Superman"? A question that was asked time and time again, and always answered with the same facetious response. "Let's just kill him." Indeed, let's just kill him. A stark and biting statement. You can't kill Superman, can you? Or, perhaps, maybe you can. And so, knowing that the hit television show Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman had thrown a wrench into their current plans of marrying Clark and Lois, it was decided. Let's just kill him. In the pages of Man of Steel, readers were treated to the same disturbing event at the end of every issue. An enormous, haunting pounding. The source was a fist, ripping and clawing to escape its confinement. Finally, he escaped, the creature known as Doomsday. From there, the monster carved a path of destruction across the country, tearing through any and every superhero in his path, until he came into contact with Superman. In Superman #75, the Man From Krypton and Doomsday slaughtered each other through 22 vicious, brutal splash pages. As the two titans struck each other simultaneously, Superman fell in the very heart of Metropolis. Cradled by Lois Lane, the hero who had put himself between the people of his city, gave up his own life for the safety of so many others. Superman was dead. The aftermath of the story saw Superman return to reclaim his position against four imposters. While many may pick on the story for what they feel is a two-dimensional villain in Doomsday, they often miss the true heart of the story. It wasn't about Superman fighting a monster. It was about how the world reacted, how they felt, about a world without Superman. On-screen, the Henry Cavill version of Superman may not have enough history to recommend killing him in the upcoming Batman vs Superman team-up film. However, if the cards are played right, it could set the stage for a outstanding third outing. If Snyder and crew decide to off Superman in the third film, it could start a chain reaction of films from here on out. The ongoing mystery of the emergence of four Superman imposters, a world mourning their greatest hero, Batman's refusal to let his friend and his memory go, it's heavy stuff. And with the current crop of DC films being slightly more grown up than we are maybe used to, now would be the time to do it. Is Death of Superman too obvious?
