Marvel's Avengers: Everything You Need To Know About M.O.D.O.K.
Let's have a look at one of Marvel's weirdest-looking supervillains, M.O.D.O.K.
Let's be honest; M.O.D.O.K. is nobody's favourite supervillain. His colossal cranium makes him look like a cross between Mr. Potato Head and Humpty Dumpty.
So why the heck is Square Enix making him the central antagonist of their upcoming game, Marvel's The Avengers? Why are they scrapping the bottom of the barrel when there are so many fantastic villains in Marvel lore? I mean, M.O.D.O.K. a B-list baddie at best, right?
But as the old saying goes; never judge an encephalitic-headed man by his appearance. For nearly 60 years, M.O.D.O.K. has been one of the most consistent threats to the superhero community.
His intelligence is on the same level as a supercomputer and his psychic powers are almost on par with Professor X. He has an array of armies (living and robotic), a seemingly endless supply of weapons, and secret lairs all over the planet. He usually battles Captain America but he's fought pretty much everyone; Iron Man, Hulk, Deadpool, Thor, Captain Marvel; he's faced them all. (I mean, he lost but still.)
Here are ten things everyone needs to know about M.O.D.O.K.
10. His Origin
M.O.D.O.K. made his grand debut battling Captain America in Tales of Suspense #93 in 1967. Originally, he was a simple lab technician called George Tarleton.
Tarleton was thrilled when he was hired by A.I.M. (Advanced Idea Mechanics) since he knew it was largest scientific organisation in the world. Sadly, Tarleton was oblivious that A.I.M. was run by terrorists. The organisation’s leader, the Scientist Supreme, believed he could conquer the world by harnessing the power of the Cosmic Cube: an artefact that could grant wishes.
To utilise the Cube's power correctly, the Scientist Supreme decided to turn an expendable employee into a living computer called M.O.D.O.C., which is an acronym for "Mental Organism Designed Only for Computing." According to A.I.M.'s leader, the experiment would force Tarleton's brain to go through a billion years of evolution in a matter of moments.
However, the mutagenic procedure didn't just make M.O.D.O.C. smarter; it granted him vast psionic powers. With a single psychic blast, he killed the Scientist Supreme and renamed himself M.O.D.O.K.; “Mental Organism Designed Only for Killing.” When the Scientist Supreme's lackeys realised M.O.D.O.K. was too powerful to defeat, he was made the leader of A.I.M. then and there.
