No better place to start than the literal first ever Ghost Rider. You can't go back much farther than 1,000,000 BC, which is where we find the true original spirit of vengeance, simply known as "Ghost".

As with the rest of the riders on this list, the story of Ghost is not a happy one. Ghost lived as a caveman along with the rest of his family. Even as a young man, he found himself to be a cut above the rest in terms of intelligence, a fact that he did all he could to conceal for fear of isolation. But he wouldn't have to worry about that for long, as a mysterious stranger soon entered their camp and took control through violence.

The stranger was later revealed to be a Wendigo, and as Wendigos are one to do, he ate everyone in the tribe except for Ghost, whom he challenged to come find him.

Ghost nearly died in his quest to find the Wendigo, but before he starved, a snake challenged him to say his name. As you can surmise, the snake turned out to be the first spirit of vengeance, and he and Ghost were bound by this simple act.

Ghost would have many adventures after finally hunting down the Wendigo that killed his family, including joining the prehistoric Avengers alongside Odin and Lady Phoenix to take on monsters and fallen gods. We never find out what happened to him at the end of his story, but anyone who can tame a Wooly Mammoth and ride it into battle had to have gone down like a badass.
